Easter 2011

Easter is my absolute favorite holiday for several reasons! The first reason being we are celebrating the resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ!! What an amazing sacrifice that was made for us!! Thanks be to God!! And the music - I LOVE the music on Easter Sunday!! I also love the fact that Easter has managed to not become as commercialized as Christmas. While we were dying eggs this year I asked Conner if he knew the real reason we celebrated Easter. He immediately replied "because Jesus died on the cross and then went to Heaven"!!! I was thrilled because I was truly expecting something related to the Easter bunny.  Maybe he listens more than I give him credit for. :) Don't get me wrong I love the Easter bunny just as much as anybody (and still enjoy hiding eggs) but I am desperately trying to teach my children the true meaning of the holidays. Easter also signals the beginning of spring to me, which I absolutely love!!! After being couped up all winter, it always feels so good to get outside and enjoy the pleasant spring days before the sweltering heat of the Mississippi summer arrives.  And who doesn't love a good egg hunt (another reason to love Easter!)?
Our Easter Sunday was spent with the family!! We went to church  and afterwards there was an Easter egg hunt for the kiddos. It was Ava's first egg hunt!!! She would stand and just point at the eggs!! Once Ron or I picked it up and handed it to her she would stare at it for a minute, drop it in the basket, and point at another. It was TOOOOO funny!!!! Below are a few pictures from our day!

Conner's First Baseball Game

April 11, 2011 - Conner's First Baseball Game
I grew up playing softball and have always had a love for playing the sport!! So naturally, I couldn't wait for Conner to start playing baseball. This past week he had his first game and needless to say, I was one PROUD mama!!! I can't tell you how much joy I got from watching him play! It was obvious he had a great time and was taking it all in!! We definitely aren't ready for the major league yet but he had a GREAT time and that is all that matters!!

Conner's 5th Birthday!

WOW!! I can't believe my sweet baby boy is FIVE years old!! I still can't believe how much he has grown and how big he has gotten!! He is such a tender hearted little boy with the a sweet and kind spirit and a true mama's boy!!

He has been anxiously awaiting his birthday for weeks!! We had his party at JUMP the Sunday before his birthday and he had a BLAST!! All of us grown ups had a pretty good time too!!  It was a great day and we are so thankful to all our friends and family for helping make his day so special!

While the party was GREAT, my favorite part of  his birthday was the time he and I spent together on his birthday!! I gave him the option of doing anything he wanted that day - just "mommy and Conner"!! He chose to go to Tupelo! For some reason, my child thinks that the Tupelo mall is "AWESOME" and unlike any other!! I offered to take him to the zoo, the children's museum, etc - absolutely anywhere he wanted to go - but he insisted repeatedly that he wanted to go to Tupelo! So Tupelo it is!!! We drove down and met my parents for lunch at Chick-fil A ( guess who picked that !! ). After lunch, we spent the afternoon doing anything and everything his little heart desired! Below are the pics!!! It had been a long time since I had been able to take him out for the day - just the two of us - and I enjoyed every second of that day with my little man!!

After a long day, we headed back home, picked Ava up at the babysitter, and met Ron for supper at McDonald's  (again, Conner's choice)!!

It was an incredibly special day with an incredibly special little boy!! Happy Birthday Conner!! We love you!

Ava's 1st Birthday!!!

I can't believe it has already been a year. WOW!!

March 25, 2010 brought with it, not only a precious gift that we refer to as Ava Violet Shurden, but quite a little scare as well. Ava was born at 7:47 AM via scheduled c-section. She weighed 8 lbs and 11 ozs and was 19 inches long. I recall lying in recovery being incredibly anxious to get back to my room so I could hold my little bundle of joy. When I arrive back in my room, I learn that Ava has been sent to the NICU. Of course, as any mother would do, I instantly freaked out!! Once Ron and my mother were able to calm me down and I started breathing again, I was told she was born with fluid in her lungs (because she was born via c-section) and was placed there as strictly a precautionary measure. Apparently this is common in babies born via c-section. Common or not, precautionary or not - I was scared to death. To make a long story short, she was placed on oxygen and antibiotics and responded very quickly. She spent 48 hours in the NICU under observation and was discharged down to my room the day before we were discharged! I will never forget going to the NICU to hold and feed her and seeing some of the other babies there - Babies that had been there for weeks, some even months. I can't imagine what those parents must have been going through. We were very fortunate that what Ava was experiencing was routine (even though it did not seem like it at the time) and was able to leave the hospital with us. We take for granted that we will go to the hospital, have a baby, it will be perfectly healthy, and we will all go home. That isn't always the case and I got a taste of what that is like for some families. It has truly made me thankful to the good Lord for the health of my children.
Now  - a year later - Ava is a perfectly healthy, sweet little girl!! I can't believe it has already been a year. She has grown up way too fast!! She has the sweetest little personality and is, for the most part, always happy! She is crawling, pulling up, eating table food, saying "mama", "dada", "byebye", and "uh-oh", and all the normal things that a one year old does - including driving her big brother crazy ;).  Whatever Conner is doing is exactly what she wants to do!! As an only child, I find their relationship to be quite fascinating. She absolutely loves him to death and thinks he is just wonderful.  She just lights up when she sees him come out of school in the afternoon and won't quit squealing until he speaks to her. Generally speaking, he is great with her.  He takes time everyday to play with her and is always saying he can't wait for her to get bigger so she can do more things with him (he may regret that later). But he definitely has his moments when he would rather she just go away.  There have been several days when I look up and see him dragging her across the hall from his room to her room and then I hear "Please stay in here. You have alot of toys to play with - go play with them!!" or he will drag her to me and say, "Please take her!!"  I absolutely LOVE watching them interact and watching their relationship grow!

Below are a few pics from her birthday party! As you can see, eating the cake was Ava's favorite part of the party!

I still can't believe she is already a year old. I have enjoyed every second of this past year and all the "firsts" and can't wait to watch her grow and learn new things over the next 12 months. She is truly a blessing and a gift from above and has brought more joy to our lives than I could have ever imagined!!  We love you Ava!!

One Crazy Bunch of Episcopalians - Council 2011

As I was thumbing through my prayer book this morning, I stumbled upon the following prayer :

O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Having spent this past weekend with our church family at the Episcopal Church Annual Council, this prayer really jumped out at me.  This past weekend the good Lord gave us all a time of refreshment!! What an amazing time with an amazing group of people!! Ron and I both grew up in the church and were both very active in youth activities but never have either one of us ever felt so connected and such a part of such an incredible thing -  A group of fellow Christians who you can not only pray and worship with but who you can "let your hair down" with and just be yourself, who you can laugh and dance with and make a total fool of yourself knowing at the end of the day they love you the same!! We love our St. Timothy's church family and thank God for them every day!!!

Happy New Year!!

Blogging is something I have been wanting to do for quite some time and I figured what better time to start than now - the beginning of a new year!! I can't wait to see what this year has in store for our family!! In 2010, we welcomed our sweet baby Ava into the world and watched Conner grow into a sweet, caring big brother and start preschool at Sacred Heart School. It is amazing how much joy they bring to our daily lives!! Here is a look back at our 2010!!
